COUNTERPOINT
An Animated Short
Concept Overview
Counterpoint is a short 3D animated film that explores the complexities of bicultural identity through the metaphor of musical counterpoint, where two distinct yet interdependent voices move in relation to one another.
Visual and Technical Approach
Created in Blender, the animation uses contrasting visual rhythms, layered movement, and spatial tension to reflect the lived experience of navigating between cultures. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the piece embraces coexistence, dissonance, and harmony as central to bicultural life.
Themes of Identity and Duality
Counterpoint invites viewers to reflect on how identity can be multifaceted and fluid, less about blending into a single voice, and more about learning to live in dialogue with difference.
Creative Process and Tools
This was a passion project that allowed me to visually explore a deeply personal part of my life through 3D for the first time. It was also my first time using Blender, and I really enjoyed learning the software while figuring out how to translate emotion and memory into a digital space. Everything was built using a combination of my own modelling and free-to-use assets sourced online.
Personal Connection and Shared Resonance
What made this project especially meaningful was the chance to put myself into the work, embedding aspects of my own upbringing, identity, and experiences. At the same time, it became a way to connect with others who may have grown up navigating similar cultural complexities. The process reminded me that even personal stories can hold shared resonance.
